(POSTED FOR CHERRYH)
Music is a huge part of today’s society. Either in the car, on the computer, or on the television, music is all around us. The question is though, is rap music harmful to our society? Today’s youth looks up to people they admire. They want to dress and act just like their favorite singer or dancer. This is not always a good thing. According to Associated Content News, rap music is all about money, fame and women. If you listen to a random rap song, usually the artist is singing about one of the three. Many young kids are dropping out of school to try and make it as a professional rap artist. As you could probably guess, most do not make it and often turn to illegal activity to obtain some kind of money income. Another reason rap music is harmful to today’s youth is how they portray women. They talk as if women are objects and should be treated with no respect. Today’s youth thinks that’s “cool” because their favorite artists treat women like this so they should too. The women in music videos and in songs that send out this message do not help with the situation either. Many young girls think it is okay to be treated like this because it’s in their favorite songs or music videos.
Rap music also affects the choices kids make about sex. According to Web MD, teenagers who listen to rap music and look up to rap artists are more likely to do these behaviors in everyday life. They are more likely to be involved in gangs, have children out of wedlock, and to disrespect authority. In a study, after interviewing 522 girls between the ages of fourteen and eighteen who spent fourteen hours per week watching music videos were three times more likely then girls who do not watch them to hit a teacher, over 2.5 times more likely to get arrested, twice as likely to have multiple sex partners and 1.5 times more likely to get a sexually transmitted disease, use drugs, or drink alcohol. When I read these statistics the first thing I thought of was why are artists continuing to rap about things that have such a negative influence on the youth of today? The answer is simple. According to The Coalition against Violence, the entertainment industry has invested billions of dollars into promoting rap artists with music influenced by gangs, gangsters and the pimp culture itself. Is this money worth corrupting the future of America?
As you can see, there are definitely some reasons why rap music is harmful to our society. In reality though, all rap music is not bad. There are actually some artists out there that rap about their problems and the issues going on in the world. They tell their listeners how they are feeling and what their life is like. I support the artists that rap about this because they can really connect to teenagers that are going through similar situations as themselves.

ReplyDeleteI believe this post is making a good point about how music in some cases can have a roll on how kids act. But I wouldn't just point the finger at the genre of rap. In all genres of music there are songs being written about topics that can have a negative influence on kids.
ReplyDeleteGood post. I agree that music can have a negative effect on people, but I don't think it's only rap music that does this.
ReplyDeleteI agree, rap music can have a negative influence on people but it isn't the only genre that does this. Good Post. :D
ReplyDeleteI lilke your post, and I agree with Morrison when she said rap is not always the only type of music that can have a negative effect.
ReplyDeleteWell I think you know more than rap can have negative effects on kids but you wanted to stay with one genre and that's good it helps the readers stay focused on one subject. I agree with your post, very well written=]
ReplyDeleteAtwood had a good point about sticking to one genre. I agree completely with this post. If you have seen Mean Girls the little sister was heavily influenced by rap music:P
ReplyDeleteThis post was great! i definitely agree Atwood's point that rap has negative effects on kids.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how just the music you listen to can affect your entire life. Interesting post.
ReplyDeleteYes it can have a negative affect on you but what doesn't in the society we live in today? Good post though. Enjoyed reading it.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really good point..and the main question is...even though we know it's bad, why do we still listen to this music?
ReplyDeletei don't believe that rap music has anything to do with peoples own choices. people make the choices they make out of emotion or the speculation that their actions will achieve the desired reaction or goal that the person is trying to achieve.
ReplyDeleteI think this post makes a good point. Rappers need to find new subject material or stop making music. The messages they portray are simply unacceptable.
ReplyDeletegood post, I think rap music can have a negative affect on kids but is it the only one that does?
ReplyDeleteGood point, but this problem is all over in music. It just happens to be most prevalent it rap, but all types of music can be used as negative or positive influences.
ReplyDeleteI find rap to be one of the more degenerate types of music. It's really fun to dance to, and some of it is really good, but the majority of the mainstream stuff is not all that great. Good post too, really hit the point home about how it influences our youth.
ReplyDeleteA fairly good post marred by the fact that its poor grammar destroyed any chance of its readership accurately understanding the meaning of the statistics presented herein.
ReplyDeleteJust to be a devil's advocate: If people are willing to pay money for something, and a company is willing to make it and sell it at the right price, what is wrong about that? Is that not the very definition of American business?
